The National Purification Office
was set up by virtue of law 37-74 dated August 03, 1974 modified by law 93-41 dated April 19, 1993 and is in charge of managing the purification sector in Tunisia.

It is a public industrial and commercial institution which is financially autonomous coming under the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Hydraulic Resources.

Missions

The incorporation law reviewed by the law dated April 1993 entrusted this institution with wider responsibilities to become not only a manager of the purification networks but also a fundamental operator in the protection of the hydric environment. Within this framework the Office is in charge of following missions:

Fighting against any type of hydric pollution.
Managing, using, maintaining and renewing purification structures.
Promoting and reusing the sub-products of purification stations
Planning and executing integrated projects.

Organization

The National Purification Office is managed by a board of directors which is headed by a President Director General appointed by virtue of a decree and also by members representing the ministries related to the purification activity as well as a representative from major town districts.
According to the Government strategy aiming at reinforcing the decentralization and at moving services closer to citizens, 13 regional departments are spread according to geographic criteria. These departments are in charge of studies, implementation of projects and their follow up. They are also in charge of using and maintaining purification structures in their intervention areas.
